TRMC Welcomes Back Dr. Velcu to its Surgery Department

Three Rivers Medical Center is proud to announce the return of Laura Velcu, M.D. as a general/bariatric surgeon to Louisa.  Velcu returns to the community after a brief stint as the bariatric medical director at Geisinger in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.  With her she brings back a wealth of expertise and skills.  

The specialties she will offer include the use of a minimally invasive approach in a variety of general surgery procedures; treatment of upper, lower gastrotestinal diseases including GERD; repair of hiatal hernias; treatment of breast disease, skin cancer, varicose veins and ulcers associated with venous insufficiency; repair of abdominal wall hernias and weight loss surgery.  

“I really want to make healthcare in Louisa better” said Dr. Velcu.  “Three Rivers has a quality staff of surgeons and surgical support staff.  I am excited to be back and be a part of this great hospital.” 

Dr. Velcu’s resume includes Carol Davila Medical School in Bucharest, Romania; internships and residencies at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, N.Y.; a surgical fellowship in complex and minimally invasive surgery at the University of Pittsburgh; Magee Women’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa. and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio; along with contributions to medical journals through active research.  She is certified by the American Board of Surgery and a member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgery. 

Dr. Velcu’s first day was January 25, 2010.  She is currently accepting new patients.  Her office hours are Monday – Thursday, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. at Three Rivers Medical Plaza, Suite #107.  Appointments can be made by calling 606.638.7400.
