Three Rivers Medical Center Unveils First Phase of Surgery Department Expansion
Louisa’s primary care provider of surgery services is growing to better serve the community. The first phase of Three Rivers Medical Center’s surgery department expansion opened January15, 2010, with 3,500 additional square feet of surgery space with new amenities ranging from two new OR Suites, new recovery room with six beds and brand new anesthesia equipment. The expansion is the first phase of a two-part, $4.2 million improvement project and begun last spring.
TRMC serves approximately 4,000 patients per year in its surgery department. The expansion provides additional treatment space to accommodate more surgery suites which will allow us to perform more surgeries daily, thus decrease the amount of time a patient will wait.
“As a main provider of surgery services in the Louisa community, one of our top priorities is to provide ample space and amenities to provide our patients with the best surgery care possible,” says Greg Kiser, CEO. “A larger surgery department provides additional treatment space that will enhance patients’ comfort level and improve recovery time.”
The second phase of the project, currently underway, will include new central sterilization, patient waiting room, consultation room and employee staging area. Phase II is scheduled for completion this spring.
Three Rivers Medical Center is a 90-bed, acute care facility. It is accredited by The Joint Commission. TRMC offers cardiology, general/bariatric surgery, orthopedics, urology, gynecology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, gastroenterology, podiatry, 24-hour emergency care, diagnostic radiology, rehabilitative services and mental health.
TRMC Honors Doctors for Years of Service
Three Rivers Medical Center is proud to honor Tom Brizendine, MD, Lloyd Browning, MD and Norman Edwards, MD, for more than 42 years of practicing medicine in Lawrence County. All doctors bring a wealth of expertise and skill in their specialties.
“All of these doctors are professionals who are very dedicated to their patients and the health care field,” said Dr. Mark Kingston fellow physician. “They are genuine, humorous and compassionate individuals.”
“We want the best for our patients and to make their health care experience as pleasant as possible,” said Dr. Browning. We are always exploring opportunities to suit the needs of each of our patients and to make a difference in their lives.”
Dr. Brizendine received an undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas and his medical degree from the University of Missouri Medical School. He completed his internship at St. Joseph Hospital and his surgical residency at Wesley Medical Center, both in Wichita, KS. He practiced at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, AL before establishing his permanent practice in Louisa. Dr. Brizendine started at Three Rivers Medical Center as a surgeon in 1967 and, in 1976; he joined the Emergency Department, where he practices today.
Dr. Browning grew up in Viper, Ky. and graduated from Berea College. He received his medical degree at the University of Louisville School Of Medicine. Why is his info so slim?
Dr. Edwards, a native of Harlan, Ky., received his undergraduate degree from Ohio Wesleyan and attended The University of Louisville School of Medicine, where he met Dr. Browning in 1960.
“While in medical school, we decided to practice together in eastern Kentucky,” said Edwards. “After visiting several small towns, we chose Louis, as it was a ‘critical county’ in need of doctors.”
After receiving their medical degrees, the duo completed their internship at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis and residency at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, AL. After two years in the Air Force, the physician team considered several opportunities in eastern and central Kentucky before settling in Louisa, Ky. at the old Riverview Hospital. Louisa offered a special and unique community with strong values and a close-knit environment.
In 1967, Dr. Edwards, Dr. Browning and Dr. Brizendine joined the hospital and in 1973, formed the Riverview Family Practice. Today, they practice at Three Rivers Medical Center.
“There is no better place to live and practice medicine than the Louisa and the Lawrence county area,” said Dr. Edwards. “It allows health care professionals to be close to family and make a difference in the lives of people in their community.”
Dr. Browning is married to Marcella and they reside in the Louisa area. The couple has two children and several grandchildren. Dr. Edwards resides in Louisa with his wife Sue. The couple has three daughters, one son and 10 grandchildren. Dr. Brizendine is married to Kathie and they reside in the Ashland area. They have four children.
