Patient Privacy, Rights and Responsibilities

All patients at TRMC have the right to:
- receive care within our scope of service;
- considerate and respectful care;
- consideration of not only physical needs, but emotional, spiritual, and cultural needs as well;
- comfort and dignity for the dying patient;
- make your own decisions about your healthcare;
- formulate advance directives;
- receive medical information and records concerning your healthcare;
- make informed decisions;
- be informed about the outcomes of care, including unanticipated outcomes;
- appropriate assessment and management of pain;
- request information about hospital policies;
- register a complaint;
- consideration of ethical issues;
- to be informed of any research or experimentation;
- privacy, confidentiality, and security;
- pastoral counseling;
- access protective services;
- involvement in his/her care;
- authorize another to make decisions for you; and
- decide about withholding or withdrawing life support systems.
As a patient, it is your responsibility to:
- provide accurate and complete information about present complaints, including pain, past illnesses, hospitalizations, medications and other matters related to your health;
- the patient and family are responsible for reporting perceived risks in their care and unexpected changes in the patient's condition;
- the patient and family help the hospital improve its understanding of the patient's environment by providing feedback about service needs and expectations;
- ask questions when you do not understand;
- report unexpected changes in your condition to the responsible physician;
- say whether or not you understand a contemplated course of treatment and your obligations in its administration;
- follow the treatment plan recommended by the responsible physician and administered with the assistance of nurses and other healthcare personnel;
- abide by the no-smoking policy set forth in this facility;
- keep appointments or notify the appropriate person if you are not able to do so;
- accept the consequences of ignoring the physician's instructions or refusing treatment;
- meet the financial obligations to providers of your health care as promptly as possible; and
- follow hospital rules and regulations and respect the rights of other patients and the hospital staff.
